9:00- 12:00      Wildland Urban Interface and Fire.  Home protection from wildland fires, Firewise landscaping and Firewise communities.  David Richert, CF, RC&D Forester-Western Virginia, Virginia Department of Forestry. UNIT 5

12:00-1:00       Lunch

1:00-5:00         Firewise Community Tour with David Richert, Forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry.  Take a first-hand look at real-life FireWise management examples. Visit local homeowners’ private property and see the management strategies they have adopted to protect themselves against Wildland fires. Mr. Richert will discuss an incentive plan funded by the VDOF to assist homeowners in ‘FireWising’ their own landscape and property. UNIT 5 & 6

Alex Niemiera, VT Department of Horticulture, will provide a comprehensive look at the serious impact exotic invasive plant species have on the natural environment. He will discuss the balance between exotic and native plants in the home landscape. In addition, he will cover indicators that an exotic may or may not be an invasive. 3:30-5:00         Interactions Between Humans and Wildlife. Jim Parkhurst, VT Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Human-wildlife interaction occurs when humans come in contact with wildlife either intentionally or unintentionally. These contacts may be either positive or negative, ranging from people feeding and watching birds, to deer eating shrubs, to potential life threatening events like moose-car collisions. Learn the latest scoop about the confl ict between man and beast. You’ll hear about deer, coyotes, and more.  Torgersen Hall Room 1050 UNIT 5
